Zeiss Digiprime lenses
Carl Zeiss DigiPrime® lenses bring to digital cinematography an important feature of real cine lenses previously unknown in the world of electronic cameras: calibrated distance scales. Each DigiPrime® lens comes with an individually calibrated scale. This enables accurate measuring of distances and hence precise focusing. In order to achieve precise focus, the correct reference has to be used for measuring the distance. This correct reference is, like in film and like in optical test benches, the actual image plane. However, the index marks on electronic cameras do not mark the actual position of the image plane. The camera markings have neglected the shift of the image plane position caused by the prism block and the filters. These optical components between the lens and the CCD chips shift the actual image plane away from the lens by 17 mm. Uncalibrated distance scales have so far masked this lack of accuracy. But with Carl Zeiss DigiPrime® lenses much better focus precision can be achieved provided the correct reference is used. For this purpose Carl Zeiss supplies this sticker which can permanently mark the correct position of the actual image plane on an electronic camera.
